Guest Post on the Disney Wine and Dine 1/2 Marathon Finish Line Party

My husband Steven has been gracious enough to write a guest post on the Disney Wine and Dine 1/2 Marathon Finish Line Party that he enjoyed while I was running.  You can follow his photo blog at http://stevengoetz.wordpress.com/ if you would like.

Lisa and I waited for the bus at our resort bus stop, once Lisa got on the bus around 7 pm, I hopped on the bus to Epcot to enjoy the finish line party while she was running.

There were a lot of road closure, causing lots of traffic on my way to Epcot that night because of the race, it took me almost an hour to get there (it usually only took 15 mins to get there).

Once I got to the park it look like a regularly sized crowd at Epcot, the park closed at 9 that night. The neat thing about the Finish Line Party pass, although it was expensive, it was good from 4:00pm until 3:00 am. So in my opinion even though it did cost $64, it was worth the price because you got 11 hours of park time with it plus a $10 gift card. I decided since it was still very crowded, and lines were long at attractions, that I would go eat dinner at Sunshine Seasons.

I had read many reviews raving about the pork chop at Sunshine Seasons so I just had to try it, it lived up to it's hype! It was served with delicious mashed potatoes and a BBQ sauce that is almost a salsa. Everything tasted very fresh, and it was all very well prepared.

After eating I decided to take a stroll around World Showcase to just see what was going on at the Food & Wine Festival. It was very crowded this time of night, but there was a lot of energy in the air, my only real complaint is the amount of very drunk people that were there. People saying and doing dumb things, in very crowded spaces.

My first stop was near the Canadian pavilion, I just had to try the Wild Mushroom Beef Filet Mignon with Truffle Butter Sauce it was delicious! It lived up to all the hype. My only complaint is my dish didn't have enough of the Truffle Butter Sauce on it, but it was well cooked, and perfectly seasoned.

Once I finished my steak, it was time to find a spot for Illuminations: Reflections of Earth. I ended standing near Canada, it's first time I've seen it from this view point and it was a great show like always!

After the show, I continued my stroll around World Showcase Lagoon, I stopped at Fife and Drum near the American Pavilion and got Red Stag Lemonade by Jim Beam. It was great, stronger than I expected, but very good.

I headed for Spaceship Earth while enjoying my drink, the park had closed for regular guests, so it was time to start enjoying some attractions while the lines were short. They checked for the pink wrist bands that you received upon entry at every attraction and pavilion.

During the party, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, Soarin', Living with the Land, Spaceship Earth, Maelstrom and Gran Fiesta Tour were all open, as well as all the Food & Wine booths.

After Spaceship Earth, I headed back over to The Land, and rode Soarin' and Living with the land, then I moved on to The Seas with Nemo, there was hardly any wait for any of the attractions, the park was basically empty.

About this time I got a notification letting me know Lisa had started her half-marathon, there is free Wi-Fi in Epcot, and I was receiving e-mail alerts letting me know her progress, and approximate finish time every 5K. I decided it was time to take some longer exposures with my camera, I'm very interested in photography, and during the hustle and bustle of a regular day at the parks, I don't often get time to do some of the longer exposures I wanted to try. I had no tripod, so I was using rocks, trash cans and benches.

I got a couple good shots, I wish I had more good ones, maybe next time! After this I decided to head over to Norway to ride Maelstrom, it was great at night! As I was getting out of Norway, I received an e-mail saying Lisa had just passed the 15K mark, so I knew it was time to head to the middle of the park (by the fountain of nations) to cheer her on as she ran through Epcot. After a little waiting, there she was! We tried a high five, but missed.

Once she passed me, I moved to the front of the park to wait for her, I knew she was almost finished, an e-mail arrived telling me she finished the race, so I waited where the huge amount of runners were coming into the park.

Disney Wine and Dine 1/2 Marathon Trip Report (Day 2 - Part 2) Nov 10th 2012

Tonight was race night!  I left our hotel room to board the bus at 7pm.
Me before the race
I was lucky as the bus was just pulling up as I arrived.  I was worried how long the wait was going to feel between when I arrived at Wide World of Sports and the 10pm start, but Disney did a great job of keeping us entertained.
The DJ

All the port a potties!
I was able to sit on the grass and rest my feet before I lined up in the corral.  I had brought some Rice Krispies to snack on during the wait as well.  I should have lined up for the port a pottie a little sooner as I had to wait 1/2 hour before entering my corral.  When I got to the port a pottie, no toilet paper!
We lined up in the corrals around 9:30pm.  First I turned the wrong way and ended up in corral D.  I quickly realized my error and made my way to corral C.

I worked my way up as close to the front of the corral as possible.  I was able to get a clear view of the start.  As each corral started the others moved up.  each corral had their own fireworks!

The Hosts
The first park that we ran though was Animal Kingdom.
In front of the Tree of Life
I really enjoyed running through this park as it is my favourite park.  It did get narrow in some spots but this was the only park we actually ran through the park and not the majority of it being backstage.
Just outside of the Animal Kingdom
We then made our way to Hollywood Studios.  We entered behind tower of terror and ran mostly backstage with the exception of sunset boulevard and through the Osborne Lights.
The Osborne Lights!
I really enjoyed running through the Osborne Lights.  We then made our way to Epcot by way of the Boardwalk.  Running along the Boardwalk was nice and made the go by quickly.  I felt bad for anyone staying at the Yacht and Beach Club as I am sure we were loud running by.  We ran through the International Gateway into Epcot.  We ran backstage and then crossed Future World.  Steven had found a spot to wait for me to cheer me on.  This was a nice surprise as I was not expecting this.  We exited the park on the other side of Spaceship Earth to find the finish.  At mile 13 there was smoke and a laser show and then you made a sharp left turn to the finish!
The finishing corral was very congested.  Runners were suppose to continue through, but I don't think this was happening.  I had to really look to find someone handing out medals!  I grabbed a water and a box of prepackaged food and made my way to the finisher photos.  Then there was the long trek past the bag check and to the exit to grab my drink.  It was a long walk to the front of the part to meet Steven.  They were doing a bag check for all the runners so I was very glad that just had my water belt.  I met up with Steven and hobbled on to Spaceship Earth after I changed into my sandals.
Me after the race!
After Spaceship Earth we rode Soarin and then left the Finish Line Party as I was exhausted.  Steven has arrived at the Finish Line Party at 7pm, so he had got his moneys worth for the ticket.  (More on this in a guest post from him in the next couple days)
Some General remarks on the race:
The Good:
- Lots of Volunteers (nice, friendly Volunteers, was complimented on my weight loss from viewing my Driver's License picture!)
- Lots of water stops
- Lots of washrooms
- Napping in the afternoon before the race was definitely was a good choice!
The Not so Good:
- Not as many characters along the course as I thought there was going to be
- The finishing chute was very chaotic and disorganized
- Would be better to have run with someone else, would have added to the fun
- Always feels like you are running at a start of a race as there are s many people around you.  A lot of walkers.

Disney Wine and Dine 1/2 Marathon Trip Report (Day 1) Nov 9th 2012

Today was our first day at Disney World for the Wine and Dine 1/2 Marathon.  We arrived just before 12noon and checked in to the Caribbean Beach resort.  After lunch at the resort food court we headed to the race expo at ESPN Wide World of sports.
I was pretty disappointed in the organization and direction of the packet pickup and race expo. We figured out where to go to pickup my race number and commemorative pin.  We were then instructed to go to the other side of the building to test my timing chip.  We then browsed the race merchandise and headed to to the other building to pick up my race shirt.

After we picked up my way too big race shirt we were on a mission to find out where to pick up Steven's gift card for the Finish Line Party and our commemorative "gift" for booking 4 nights through RunDisney.  We were directed in many different directions and ended up walking around the complex twice before we found someone who actually knew how to help.  I was very frustrated by all this.  Finally we were able to find everything we needed an could finally relax and enjoy the expo.
The rolling duffel bag we received for booking through RunDisney
I ended up buying a short sleeved  Wine and Dine 1/2 Marathon shirt, a RunDisney 13.1 car magnet and a pair of CEP Compression Sleeves.

After the expo we went back to the resort and I went for a quick swim.  We then went out for dinner at Cape May Cafe and then headed to Downtown Disney for some shopping.

Christmas Decorations at Downtown Disney
We finally made it to Babycakes NYC after forgetting to try it out last year.  We bought a Red Velvet cupcake and a Blondie cupcake.
Both were very good and very sweet.  Could not tell they were vegan, gluten free and dairy free.
